‘Aubameyang has personality and confidence’

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Unai Emery always had confidence in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as he stepped up to take the penalty to seal our win over Manchester United.

The striker missed a crucial late spot kick in the north London derby at Wembley last weekend, but showed no sign of nerves as he stroked home our second from 12 yards on Sunday afternoon.

“Aubameyang has experience and he’s a specialist with scoring,” the head coach said after the game. “Lacazette can also shoot and today I had the same confidence with both.

“Auba has experience and he’s taken a lot of penalties, sometimes scoring and sometimes missing. But the most important thing is that it’s one action on the pitch.

“He has personality and confidence and I had the same confidence today like last week. For me it’s not one mistake when he didn’t score, it’s one action. The goalkeeper can save it also.”

Emery also conceded that it was a ‘soft’ penalty award, but was more than happy to accept it, after being on the wrong end of a harsh decision last weekend.

“(It was) soft, like it was last week. Against Tottenham they gave a penalty against us and today they gave a penalty against Manchester for us. I think we can be happy.”
