Arsenal in the Community help dads come together

Extra Time event at Emirates Stadium

Recently Emirates Stadium played host to Extra Time, in partnership between Music Fatherhood Football, LBI and Arsenal in the Community, which saw 100 local dads attend from a range of ages and backgrounds.

This marked the second version of the event at the stadium, providing a safe space for dads to discuss and share any parenthood-related issues with other fathers and recognise that they are not alone in any challenges they face. Topics that were discussed included what constitutes the modern dad, as well as mental health and wellbeing for fathers.

Fathers can often face feelings of self-doubt, loneliness and isolation, with Extra Time providing a platform to find solidarity with others facing similar challenges. After the group session in the Royal Oak, the dads were taken on a stadium tour, visiting our dressing room and media room, as well as having the opportunity to take pictures in the stands and lots of photos pitchside.

“It's hard to put into words just how amazing the event was," said Elliott Rae of Music Fatherhood Football. "I've spoken to dads who said it was the first time they have ever been part of an event where they have had the opportunity to share their parenting challenges and get support from other men.

“Many connections were made and lots of conversations were had around navigating and redefining gender roles, how to build healthy relationships and the importance of widening our support networks. It was a special day – one that I think will impact people for the rest of their lives.”

Jack Ironside, Senior Manager Social Inclusion at Arsenal, said, “It was great to work with MFF again to deliver this event at Emirates Stadium alongside Islington Council.

"There is often a perception that men find it hard to talk about their challenges but through creating spaces like this, inside the stadium, we found that those who attended enjoyed connecting with other dads, sharing their experiences and creating a sense of belonging. A huge thank you to MFF and Islington Council for their support with this event.”
