From the vault: Six of the best against Palace

Patrick Vieira scores against Crystal Palace in 2005

On Saturday we return to Premier League action when Crystal Palace cross the river to face us at Emirates Stadium, and there have been plenty of memorable matches against the Eagles in our history.

Some incredible goals have been scored when Palace come to town, as well as some marvellous individual performances and emphatic results recorded, so we’ve headed into the vault to unearth six favourites.

Take a trip down memory lane below:

April 11, 1992
Arsenal 4-1 Crystal Palace

Paul Merson took centre stage in this contest, which was one of our last in the old First Division before the creation of the Premier League.

The Eagles had gotten themselves in front through Chris Coleman, before Merson popped up the back post to convert an Ian Wright cross, and then netted a sublime chip to put us in front. An absolute rocket from Kevin Campbell increased the lead before half-time, before Merson completed his treble with a simple header in the second half.

May 8, 1993
Arsenal 3-0 Crystal Palace

This was some final-day despair for Palace, who were relegated as a consequence of this defeat and results elsewhere in the division, and it was made worse when former Eagle Wright opened the scoring.

Paul Dickov and Campbell also got in on the act for us as we rounded off the campaign with a win to finish 10th position in the inaugural Premier League season.

February 14, 2005
Arsenal 5-1 Crystal Palace

This was a Valentine's Day that Gooners truly loved after we put in an incredible display to thrash Ian Dowie’s Eagles. Dennis Bergkamp opened the scoring before Jose Antonio Reyes arrowed in a second, and that was before Thierry Henry began to come to the fore.

He belted home a netbuster to make it 3-0 before a delicious pass allowed Patrick Vieira to walk the ball in, and then added a second for good measure to restore our four-goal lead after Andy Johnson had reduced the arrears from the penalty spot.

January 1, 2017
Arsenal 2-0 Crystal Palace

Olivier Giroud extended the new year celebrations for a little while longer when he produced a piece of brilliance to score one of the most memorable goals in Emirates Stadium history.

After his cute flick started a counter-attack deep in our own half, he ended the move by acrobatically backheeling Alexis Sanchez's cross on the volley past a stunned Wayne Hennessey to open the scoring. Alex Iwobi added the all-important second after the break, but this game will always be remembered for the Frenchman’s piece of breathtaking skill.

January 20, 2018
Arsenal 4-1 Crystal Palace

We raced out of the traps in this encounter, scoring four times in the first 22 minutes to clinch the points with well over an hour to still to play.

Nacho Monreal bagged a header before teeing up Iwobi and Laurent Koscielny to make it 3-0 after 12 minutes, and then Alexandre Lacazette tucked home a fourth after a well-worked move. Luka Milivojevic pulled back a consolation late on, but there was little pride to be taken back to south London.

March 19, 2023
Arsenal 4-1 Crystal Palace

We replicated that scoreline five years later to move eight points clear at the top of the Premier League with a scintillating display to blow past managerless Crystal Palace. Vieira had been dismissed as Eagles boss two days earlier, and the misery continued when Gabriel Martinelli fired in our opener after 28 minutes.

Bukayo Saka added another just before half-time and then a fine passing move was finished off by Granit Xhaka 10 minutes after the break to put the game to bed. Jeffrey Schlupp pulled one back, but Saka restored our three-goal lead with a first-time finish to seal his brace.
