Sixteen years after making her first-team debut, Alex Scott made her final home appearance for us during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Manchester City.
Our club captain replaced Beth Mead up front in the final minute of added time as we secured an important three points in the race for Champions League football.
Scott spoke the media after the game, and this is what she said:
on the perfect ending…
It was. All I asked for was just a win on the last home game and the girls delivered, especially in the second half, so I’m proud of that.
on how emotional it was…
The guard of honour really set me off and I’m going to struggle now if I keep talking! It’s the end of an era. I’ve been at this club since I was eight and it means a lot to me, but I’ve got a new chapter ahead of me now.
on having the chance to score…
I know! Why didn’t Dan Carter just square me the ball? Jordan Nobbs was screaming at her as well and it could’ve been the fairytale ending. Look, she’s a striker and it’s the striker’s instinct to shoot.
on the highlight of her time at the club…
I think it has to be the quadruple season. Vic Akers, who’s leaving the club as well this year, it was his 20th anniversary of starting the women’s team, so to win the quadruple that season was truly special.
on whether there were a few tears when she came on…
Yeah, a few. It’s hard because I didn’t want Joe to put me on and risk the result. We’ve still got a chance of a Champions League spot, so I didn’t want him to put me on to risk the result of the team, but he told me to play up front. Dan Carter could’ve squared the ball, but oh well! My career started up front and it’s finished that way too.
on how the season will end…
There’s still two games to go so the girls have put themselves in the mix. Joe’s got this team back in this position but there’s still two games to go for them.
on what it would mean to qualify for the Champions League…
It would be absolutely amazing. I can’t speak highly enough of Joe. He’s literally come in and has set the standard so high once again. That’s what this team needs. It’s full of potential but they still need to be coached and led in the right direction. I do feel like I’m stepping away but Joe is moving this club forward again.
