Africa Cup of Nations: Iwobi stars in Nigeria win

Nigeria

The Africa Cup of Nations continued on Wednesday. Scroll down to find out how our stars got on:

Alex Iwobi played 77 minutes as Nigeria beat Guinea in Alexandria to consolidate their place at the top of Group B.

Starting at No 10, our Hale End graduate drifted into space well and was a constant threat throughout a tense opening 45 minutes. After racing into the box on two occasions, Iwobi had the opportunity to break the deadlock with a rasping effort from 25 yards but Ibrahim Kone was equal to his effort.

The Super Eagles continued to mount the pressure after the break and again our forward was at the heart of things, this time having a top-corner-bound strike tipped just wide by Kone. It was the third of his four shots that had worked the goalkeeper.

But eventually the breakthrough did come, when Kenneth Omeruo powered a header into the far corner to claim his first goal for Nigeria. Iwobi was then replaced by Villarreal forward Samuel Chukwueze with just 13 minutes to go, as the Super Eagles held onto their lead to maintain their 100 per cent record in the competition.

Mohamed Elneny also picked up successive wins with Egypt. Having overcome Zimbabwe in their group-stage opener, the hosts knew that three points against DR Congo would put them in pole position to qualify for the knockout stage as group winners.

They got off to a fast start, too. Ahmed Elmohamady fired home from a corner after just 25 minutes and then when Trezeguet went on a marauding run through the midfield, Mo Salah was on hand to secure the victory. Elneny played the full 90 minutes, providing an effective shield in front of the hosts' defence.

Iwobi will be in action again on Sunday, when they face Madagascar in their final group-stage game. Kick-off is at 5pm (UK time), while Elneny is expected to feature later that evening when the hosts take on Uganda at 8pm.
