Arsenal had captain Jayne Ludlow sent off but won 1-0 at Everton to climb to within a point of Women's Premier League leaders Leeds Carnegie.
England winger Rachel Yankey took advantage of a defensive error to shoot the Gunners in front after just six minutes.
The visitors had the better of the first half, but Everton took control after the break and had chances to level the scores following Ludlow's dismissal for a a 75th-minute confrontation with midfielder Fara Williams.
England midfielder Jill Scott was the worst culprit, missing an open goal in the last minute after the ball had struck the bar to land at her feet.
