A Kelly Smith brace helped Arsenal Ladies secure a comfortable 4-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.
Having despatched Rovers by the same scoreline on the opening day of the season, the Ladies produced an equally effective performance to extend their lead at the top of the Women’s Premier League to six points.
The visitors had already struck the bar twice inside the opening 20 minutes before Niamh Fahey connected with a Smith corner to head Arsenal in front on the half-hour.
Eight minutes later Smith turned from provider to scorer, wriggling through the Blackburn backline to fire home Arsenal’s second.
Blackburn enjoyed their own period of dominance after the interval but it didn’t stop Karen Carney from extending her side’s lead after 56 minutes. Smith applied the icing on the cake after 68 minutes grabbing her second, and Arsenal’s fourth, of the match.
