Ralph Guthrie

Goalkeeper Ralph Guthrie understudied Welsh international Jack Kelsey while at Arsenal.

He impressed with Tow Law before moving to Highbury in December 1952 and was given his First Division debut in the Gunners' 2-1 defeat at Manchester City in September 1954.

Also featuring in the following month's 1-0 reverse at home to Portsmouth, he helped win the Eastern Counties League title in 1954/55.

Guthrie joined Hartlepool United in July 1956 and was an ever-present in their 1956/57 promotion near miss.

Later with Horden CW, he was a shipyard joiner, residing in his native Hartlepool until his death in September 1996. (With thanks to Leigh Edwards)
