Moritz Volz may not have made the grade at Arsenal but, like many others before and after him, the defender's education at London Colney provided the perfect platform for success.
Volz is just one name on the growing list of academy hopefuls to carve out a successful career elsewhere after first-team opportunities became limited at Highbury.
The German full back began his youth career with Schalke before Arsenal scouts soon took notice and brought his talents to north London in summer 1999.
He eventually made his debut with a starting berth in a 2-1 League Cup defeat to Ipswich, before featuring for the final time off the bench against Sunderland in the same competition two season later.
But with the likes of Lee Dixon and Lauren ahead in the pecking order, Volz moved on loan to Wimbledon and immediately endeared himself to the Dons' faithful with a debut goal against Brighton.
Fulham secured his services on loan in the summer of 2003 and made the move permanent five months later. Volz was a popular figure in west London, scoring the Premier League's 15,000th goal against Chelsea in December 2006.
After five years with Fulham, the defender joined St. Pauli in the Bundesliga.
