Versatile forward Joel produced plenty of magic moments during his first full season with the club.
After returning from his five-month loan at Villarreal, the Costa Rica international started the Gunners’ League Cup win at Tottenham Hotspur before scoring his first goal for the club against Swansea City.
Joel went on to play 30 times in all competitions, scoring four times in all and earning plaudits for his vision and incisive passing , contributing crucial assists in Champions League wins over Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos.
An accomplished winger on either flank, he spent his first season as an Arsenal player back in 2011/12 on loan at Lorient in France, before another temporary spell with Spanish side Real Betis the following year.
His most successful loan came the following campaign, when he won the Greek championship with Olympiacos and scored 11 goals, including a memorable strike against Manchester United in the Champions League.
Joel is the first Costa Rican to play for Arsenal and has made more than 50 appearances for his country. After scoring at the 2014 World Cup in La Tricolor’s group-stage victory against Uruguay, he converted a penalty in the last-16 win over Greece, as Costa Rica reached the quarter-finals of the tournament.
The forward also helped his country reach the last eight at the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup and was an integral part of Costa Rica’s Copa America Centenario squad last summer.
