Dr. James Paterson qualified as a doctor in Scotland and joined Arsenal as an amateur in October 1920 after taking up a medical practice in Clapton.
The outside left was a medical officer in the London Scottish during the First World War and won the Military Cross for service in France.
Paterson played regularly in his first season at the Club after making his debut against Derby County in October 1920.
He made only two appearances the following campaign but returned to play 27 times in 1922/23.
Paterson retired from football at the end of the 1923/24 season to concentrate on his medical work but was persuaded to re-sign by Herbert Chapman during 1925/26 before finally retiring.
He started 77 matches, scoring twice.
