WHAT HAPPENED

We suffered another frustrating defeat in the Women’s Super League on Wednesday night as we were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea.

Noelle Maritz made her first start since returning from injury, while Lydia Williams replaced Manuela Zinsberger in goal. Caitlin Foord, who scored against Manchester City on Sunday, unfortunately missed out through a knee injury.

Chelsea started strong at Kingsmeadow, pressing from the front and pinning us deep into our own half, but we stood our ground and went on to wrestle back control.

First, Vivianne Miedema breezed past two defenders and saw her poked effort pushed away by Ann Katrin Berger, before Katie McCabe’s strike from distance was claimed.

We continued to dominate possession and created a number of openings behind Chelsea’s defence, but for all our effort, we failed to create a clear-cut opportunity.

It was quite the opposite for the hosts though, as just three minutes after the restart, Pernille Harder opened the scoring with a low drive into the bottom corner.

Less than 10 minutes later she doubled the hosts’ advantage, firing an unstoppable effort into the roof of the net from inside the penalty area.

Fran Kirby then went on to make it three in the 90th minute, racing past our defence before slotting past Williams.
