WHAT HAPPENED
Our perfect start to 2020 continued on Sunday as we ran out 4-0 winners over Brighton and maintained our three-point lead at the top of the Women’s Super League table.
We were held to a goalless draw the last time we faced the Seagulls on the road, but this time around Joe Montemurro opted for a 3-4-3 formation and treated the travelling fans to an outstanding attacking performance.
Leah Williamson, playing on the right side of our back three, was particularly impressive and helped us to open the scoring after just three minutes.
The England international launched a crossfield pass over Brighton’s defence and into the path of Danielle van de Donk, who charged into the area and applied a delicate dinked finish at the near post.
Williamson then went on to assist our second of the afternoon, again receiving the ball out on the right, before finding Jill Roord inside the area. The Netherlands international took one touch and fizzed a stunning half-volley into the bottom corner.
The hosts shored things up for the remainder of the first half, but they couldn’t match our intensity and quality at the start of the second. Van de Donk played an incisive first-time pass into the area and Vivianne Miedema dummied a touch, allowing Jordan Nobbs to race through on goal and coolly finish past Megan Walsh.
Substitute Beth Mead made it four late on, pouncing on a defensive error to fire into the top left corner and cap off an team exceptional team performance.
