Vivianne Miedema’s first-half strike saw us narrowly beat Liverpool 1-0 at Meadow Park.
This was our seventh clean sheet in a row in all competitions and Leah Williamson and Jen Beattie marshalled our backline once again against the Reds.
The visitors would have been ahead inside 10 minutes had it not have been for a superb save by Manuela Zinsberger, who tipped Sophie Bradley-Auckland’s goalbound header on to the post.
Moments later, Miedema latched onto a soft backpass by Rhiannon Roberts but couldn’t get the ball under control as her effort was blocked by Anke Preuß.
Midway through the first half, Miedema did get the better of Preuß when she collected the ball on the edge of the box, weaved past a Liverpool defender and fired low into the far corner.
Danielle van de Donk almost doubled our lead when Lisa Evans drove down the wing and picked out our Dutch playmaker but she could only direct her effort wide from inside the box.
On the stroke of half time we should have grabbed a second when Katie McCabe’s throw in found Miedema down the left, she drove to the byline and presented the ball across goal to Beth Mead whose side-footed effort flew wide.
Early in the second half Williamson tried her luck from distance and it almost payed dividends as her shot dipped over Preuß but crashed against the top of the crossbar.
Shortly after, Mead picked up the ball on the edge of the area, cut inside and curled an effort towards the top corner but Liverpool’s keeper made a great reaction save to turn the ball around the post.
