Our first match of pre-season ended in defeat in a close encounter at Emirates Stadium - though the afternoon was tarnished by a serious-looking injury suffered by Danielle Carter.

Katie McCabe almost lit up the occasion early on when her speculative chip from 30 yards almost caught out Laura Benkrath - but dipped just over the bar.

Nice footwork moments later from Carter allowed her to cross the ball into the path of Tabea Kemme, whose outstretched effort trickled wide.

It was, however, the visitors who took the lead in the 24th minute, when captain Melanie Leupolz powered home a header from close range following an inviting free-kick from the left-hand side.

Louise Quinn came close twice in a matter of minutes but neither of her efforts from set-pieces were able to trouble Benkarth.

A late flurry saw us pin the visitors in their own half but unfortunately we couldn’t find the goalscoring touch as we entered half-time a goal down.

Bayern started the second half brightly and would have been two goals to the good had it not have been for Jennifer Beattie’s impressive block to avert danger.

Debutant Manuela Zinsberger denied former teammate Jovana Damnjanovic with a smart save down to her right after the forward found space inside the box.

A fast-paced counter attack saw McCabe drive into the box but her effort was blocked before it could trouble Schulter.

We then created arguably our best chance of the match, McCabe going through but seeing her effort blocked by Lorina Wenninger, after we had pinched the ball on the halfway line.

Then came a worrying moment - Carter going down on halfway after stretching to win the ball in midfield. After a lengthy stoppage, our forward was stretchered off to a warm ovation from the Emirates crowd.

Substitute Melisa Filis had a golden chance to level the tie late on but her volley from the edge of the area was held by Carina Schulter.
