Beth Mead and Kim Little were both on target as we won the Toulouse International Ladies Cup with a 2-2 draw against Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.
WHAT HAPPENED
The French side started well on home soil, forcing Sari van Veenendaal into a good stop inside three minutes before our No 1 held onto Annissa Lahmari’s free-kick.
Despite PSG’s fast start, though, we drew first blood. Mead found a yard of space and rifled an unstoppable effort into the net to give us the lead.
The French side were immediately back on the front foot and should have equalised through Ashley Lawrence, but the Canada forward poked her effort well off target.
Pauline Peyraud-Magnin replaced Van Veenendaal for the second half and, after our new keeper had seen a header float just over the crossbar, she could only watch as Lahmari slotted home from close range.
PSG were in the ascendency but we were gifted a chance to win the game from the penalty spot in the 90th minute. Little slammed home from 12 yards but there was to be another twist.
Our opponents looked long in search of an equaliser and after we had failed to deal with a direct pass, Melike Pekel pounced to secure a draw in stoppage time.
The late goal would have left a sour taste in Joe Montemurro’s mouth, but it was still enough to see us lift the trophy at the end of the game, with Jordan Nobbs crowned Best Player and Van Veenendaal named Best Goalkeeper.
WHAT’S NEXT
We turn our attention to our season opener against West Ham United in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres Cup on Sunday.
