Goals from Vivianne Miedema and Danielle van de Donk helped us to complete a comeback against Montpellier in the Toulouse International Ladies Cup on Friday night.
WHAT HAPPENED
It was an unfortunate start to the game for Joe Montemurro’s side, who conceded against the run of play in the 22nd minute. Stina Blackstenius received a lofted ball over the top of our defence, raced through on goal and made no mistake in firing the ball under Sari Van Veenendaal.
We had a golden opportunity to level the score on the half-hour mark when Kim Little was fouled inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot, but our No 10 failed to convert from 12 yards and dragged her effort wide.
Montpellier went on to have the greater share of possession as the second half came to a close, but deep into stoppage time Miedema popped up inside the box and fired home at the back post. That’s her fifth goal in her last two pre-season outings.
We continued to create a wealth of chances in the second half, with Beth Mead, Little and Van de Donk coming close, but Casey Murphy continued to deny us with a number of stunning saves.
Fifteen minutes from time, however, substitute Jordan Nobbs received the ball inside the box and picked out Van de Donk, who leapt high to head the ball beyond the reach of Murphy.
WHAT’S NEXT
We must now turn our attention to our second Toulouse International Ladies Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.
