WHAT HAPPENED

We began life under interim head coach Ismael Garcia with a solid 2-0 victory over Everton on Sunday afternoon.

The early stages of the encounter favoured the hosts, but we stood strong to the test and managed to ride out the stream of attacks from the home side.

With 21 minutes on the clock, Beth Mead burrowed into the Everton area before unleashing a shot at goal, but Lizzie Durack was equal to it.

Just moments after, however, we made the breakthrough. Vivianne Miedema shuffled the ball back and forth inside the area before powering a fierce strike past Durack with the help of the crossbar.

Jordan Nobbs threatened to extend our advantage with a free-kick from just outside the area, but Durack was once again on hand to see off the danger.

Sari van Veenendaal had the referee to thank after Everton forced the ball home, only to be denied an equaliser after an infringement was spotted against our Netherlands international goalkeeper.

Miedema looked to double her tally before the break, but Durack produced another fine save in added time.

Durack versus Miedema was quickly becoming the story of the match, with the pair doing battle once more in the 50th minute when the former tipped over a venomous volley from the latter.

With the final 10 minutes approaching, we finally found our way past Durack once more, with Mead confounding the Everton stopper with a lobbed effort from distance.

Jemma Rose looked to add a third in the final throws of this encounter, but two goals proved enough to give us a return to winning ways in Widnes.
