WHAT HAPPENED

We returned to winning ways with an emphatic victory over Sunderland at Meadow Park on Sunday.

We started the game with promise, when Beth Mead picked up a loose ball on the right hand-side and fired a powerful effort on goal, which was tipped over the crossbar by Rachel Laws.

Soon after, Mead tested the goalkeeper once again, drilling a low effort on target, which Laws was equal to.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, Vivianne Miedema almost found the breakthrough, but headed Heather O’Reilly’s delivery off the crossbar.

Our next clear chance of the game fell to Louise Quinn who met Jordan Nobb's free-kick, only for Laws to keep out her header from close range.

Quinn would have more success after the break, though. On the hour mark, the defender once again met Nobb's set-piece and headed past Laws to open the scoring.

We soon doubled our lead through Miedema, who curled in a fine effort from outside of the box to add some breathing room.

With full-time nearing, Nobbs stretched our lead to three with an unstoppable free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.

Late on, Anna Moorhouse was called into action to deny Simona Karen, who had raced through one-on-one, only to see the goalkeeper block her effort.

WHAT IT MEANS

Victory puts us on 10 points and sees us rise to third in the Women's Super League table, leapfrogging Reading and Liverpool, but three points behind leaders Chelsea.

WHAT’S NEXT

Up next we travel to Watford in the Continental Cup, for our final game of the group stage.
