WHAT HAPPENED
We continued our push up the Premier League 2 table with a strong win on the road against Sunderland, thanks to goals from Emile Smith Rowe and Tyreece John-Jules.
After a quiet start at Eppleton Colliery, Smith Rowe exquisitely curled us in front with a fantastic effort from the edge of the area.
We almost doubled our lead through Reiss Nelson, who drilled a shot just wide of the mark after being played in by Jordi Osei-Tutu.
Now totally dominating the match, we found a second goal when John-Jules dinked in from close range, following a powerful run from Josh Dasilva from deep and a cute touch from Nelson.
Just moments after the interval we could have added our third, as Dasilva blasted a shot inches over the crossbar having been teed up by Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Sunderland did pull a goal by through Elliot Embleton.
But, keen not to let our lead slip, we soon regained our two-goal cushion courtesy of John-Jules, who met Tolaji Bola’s delivery to tap in from close range.
WHAT IT MEANS
A win sees us maintain the pressure on second-placed Leicester City, who we trail on goal difference, and league leaders Liverpool, who are four points ahead.
WHAT’S NEXT
We host fourth-placed Everton at Meadow Park in the league, hoping to continue our fine run of form.
