WHAT HAPPENED

George Lewis scored on his under-21s debut on Tuesday night as we sealed an impressive 2-1 win over Ipswich town in the Leasing.com Trophy.

Prolific goalscorer Folarin Balogun also found the back of the net, while Mark McGuinness impressed as captain in the heart of our defence.

We made a promising start to the game and looked dangerous on the break, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring when Jon Nolan converted Alan Judge’s cross inside the area.

We didn’t let our heads drop, though, and following a spell of pressure on the stroke of half time, Lewis found space inside the area and fired into the bottom corner.

It could be argued that our equaliser was against the run of play, but our second was anything but.

After starting the second half with greater attacking intensity, Ben Cottrell picked up the ball on the halfway line and played a defence-splitting pass for Balogun, who raced through on goal and duly finished.

Miguel Azeez then went on to rattle the crossbar with an audacious free-kick from distance, before Salah-Eddine Oulad M'hand fired over after beating his marker with a nutmeg.

The hosts took control of the game in the latter stages, using their experience to pin us back, but we dug deep and held our shape to secure three valuable points.
