WHAT HAPPENED
Tyreece John-Jules hit a first half hat-trick on Monday as we ran out 5-0 winners over Leicester City in the U-18 Premier League.
Folarin Balogun and Trae Coyle were also on the scoresheet, meaning we’re currently top of the table after leapfrogging Tottenham Hotspur.
After being knocked out of the FA Youth Cup last weekend, we made the best possible start against the Foxes, scoring in the fourth minute.
John-Jules’ lofted pass played Balogun through on goal and forced Connor Barrett into a rash foul, leaving the referee with no other choice than to brandish a red card. John-Jules stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.
Shortly after, Balogun’s backheel was saved by Maciej Stolarczyk, before John-Jules doubled our advantage with a composed finish. Matt Smith provided the assist with an incisive pass from inside his own half.
Our third arrived in the 22nd minute and this time it was Balogun, who latched on to Sam Greenwood’s first-time through ball to score his 12th league goal of the season.
The pressure continued and on the stroke of half-time John-Jules completed his hat-trick with a thumping strike, following some fine footwork from Balogun inside the area. The 18-year-old has now scored 10 goals in 18 appearances all competitions this season.
In the second half we were unable to replicate our goalscoring form from the opening 45 minutes, but that didn’t stop Trae Coyle from adding to the scoreline with a powerful finish from inside the six-yard box.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN
We’re currently one point clear at the top of the table - but second-placed Tottenham have a game in hand.
WHAT’S NEXT
Ken Gillard’s side must now prepare for their trip to Southampton on Saturday, February 23.
The game will take place at Staplewood with kick-off at 11.30am (UK time).
