WHAT HAPPENED

The Unai Emery era got off to an encouraging start as we sealed a comprehensive victory against National League side Boreham Wood .

There was genuine excitement and intrigue as our new head coach took charge of his first game, and he couldn't have asked for a better opening at a sun-drenched Meadow Park.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the opener with a stunning curling effort into the top corner, before stooping to head in a second just two minutes later after a slaloming run from Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

The Gabon international completed his hat-trick from the spot after Reiss Nelson was hauled down in the area, with the young forward adding a fourth himself with a superb volley into the top corner.

Maitland-Niles and Emile Smith Rowe were full of positivity, and the latter was involved in our fifth - winning the ball in defence before Aubameyang released Alexandre Lacazette to open his account.

It was all change for the second half, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Henrikh Mkhitaryan thrown into the fray, but it was youngster Eddie Nketiah who poked home from close range to extend our lead.

Jeff Reine-Adelaide, back at the club after a loan spell back in France with Angers, sent a fizzing strike into the bottom corner to make it seven.

Mkhitaryan wrapped things up with a fine finish to complete a satisfactory afternoon for Emery and his team, and while there may be bigger challenges to come over pre-season, there was plenty here to cheer our new head coach.

First look: The best of Sokratis, Guendouzi

We got our first glimpse of Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Matteo Guendouzi on Saturday as we eased to a comprehensive victory at Boreham Wood.

The Greek international lined up at the heart of the defence and was straight into the action, winning headers, organising the backline and enjoying the physical battle.

Guendouzi came on midway through the second half and looked in confident mood, keeping it simple with his distribution but working hard to win back the ball when we lost possession.

Auba and Auba and Auba again

It didn't take long for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to start firing again.

In Saturday's friendly win at Boreham Wood, the Gabon international scored a hat-trick within 17 minutes - including a stunning strike to open the Unai Emery era in style.

Auba continued to threaten and even claimed an assist before the interval with a well-weighted pass for Alexandre Lacazette to score.

Auba on his hat-trick and working under Emery

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wasted no time in underlining his quality to our new head coach, Unai Emery.

The Gabon international scored a hat-trick within 17 minutes at Boreham Wood and he spoke to Arsenal Media at half-time to discuss the performance.

This is what he said:

on scoring a hat-trick…

I’m really happy and I think today what was important was the work of the team. We had great work in the first half, so I’m really happy and everyone played well, so that's good.

on the team holding its shape and leaving the forwards to create...

Yes, that's the plan and of course we try to do good pressing, but everyone knows what they have to do and that's important. The coach is doing well in these [first] two weeks. We’re working hard and we try to improve every day.
