WHAT HAPPENED

Alexis scored a dramatic stoppage-time penalty to snatch all three points at Turf Moor.

We beat Burnley with last-gasp goals in both Premier League meetings last season and this makes it three in a row. The bigger picture? We’re back in the top four.

The spot-kick was an easy one to give after James Tarkowski shoved Aaron Ramsey as Sead Kolasinac headed across goal. And Alexis was coolness personified with a low finish past goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Both teams went into this game with 22 points and the chance to propel themselves into the Champions League places with a win.

Alexis taking the game to Burnley early on

And you could see why Burnley have been flying so high. Disciplined in defence and tidy on the ball, they rarely concede clear-cut chances and are a menace in the air at the other end.

We could have done more to quell Burnley’s aerial threat in the first half, but we stood firm amid a flurry of crosses thanks largely to the determination of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi.

Johann Gudmundson went as close as anyone to breaking the deadlock, beating Nacho Monreal and firing a shot off the upright - with the help of Petr Cech’s fingertips.

But we had a decent chance too, Alex Lacazette getting away from Tarkowski and crossing for Ramsey to flash a first-time effort over the bar.

Aaron Ramsey came close to striking in the first half

A brilliant block from Mustafi denied Steven Defour and Cech pushed away a free-kick from Robbie Brady, but we grew into the game. And as our passing got crisper, the hosts looked more vulnerable.

Now it was about getting that final ball right. Lacazette produced a good one but Alexis was robbed as he shaped to shoot. Then Alexis found Kolasinac but the Bosnian opted against a first-time finish and the chance went.

Ramsey span and shot just over, and Wilshere came off the bench to go close with an effort that flicked off Tarkowski and drifted wide.

But we never settled for a draw and it was Alexis - again - who had the final word.
