SEN students get on the ball

Arsenal in the Community The Courtyard School

Arsenal in the Community cannot operate in a vaccuum, and much of our work relies on partnerships with local organisations that share our mission to give local people a sense of belonging.

Since 2022, Arsenal in the Community has been partnering with The Courtyard School through our Premier League Inspires programme. The Courtyard, a specialist Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) provision for students aged 13 to 19, empowers its students to grow in confidence, develop independence and thrive as happy, vibrant individuals.

Through Premier League Inspires, we have engaged multiple cohorts of young people in various projects, spanning employability to social action. Each programme combines football and classroom activities to support students’ personal development alongside the rich curriculum offered at The Courtyard.

Working with Special Educational Needs (SEN) provisions is central to Arsenal in the Community’s mission, ensuring we create safe spaces where all young people can enjoy developing their skills both on and off the pitch.

Our dedicated coaches Josh and Rebecca work with Courtyard students weekly, and this term they are focusing on building their confidence on the pitch and preparing them for their upcoming fixtures. They have been particularly proud to see improvements in the players’ creativity – both individually and as a team – and the sense of unity they bring to each session.

“We are delighted to welcome The Courtyard to tonight’s Arsenal Women v Juventus game,” says Arsenal in the Community’s Holly Fanshawe. “The pupils have made tremendous progress and we’re incredibly proud of their growth both on and off the pitch. A big thank you must also go to the teaching staff for consistently creating truly enriching opportunities for these students.”

Wayne Eardley, head of PE at The Courtyard, adds, “The programme has become a key part of The Courtyard Islington’s sports pathway, providing access to Arsenal’s exceptional coaching staff and facilities. Our students are fully engaged in sessions at The Arsenal Hub and look forward to each one.

“The programme has helped them build lasting friendships, develop communication skills, foster a sense of community and cultivate respect for team-mates and coaches.”

And long may that continue.
