Argentina 3-1 Mexico, Second Round

Carlos Vela's World Cup is over.

A hamstring injury sidelined the Arsenal striker for Mexico's last-16 clash with Argentina and he looked on as El Tricolor crashed to a 3-1 defeat.

Carlos Tevez was in an offside position when he headed Argentina in front in the 25th minute – but the goal was allowed to stand.

Mexico were incensed and their prospects of reaching the Quarter-Finals faded further before half-time when Gonzalo Higuain capitalised on a mistake by Ricardo Osorio.

Tevez scored an outstanding goal in the second half to put the result beyond doubt before Javier Hernandez netted a consolation with 19 minutes left.

Mexico have now been eliminated from the last five World Cups at the round of 16 stage. And Vela’s departure leaves just two Arsenal players – Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie – in with a shout of lifting the big prize.
