Jayne Ludlow thinks that attack will be the best form of defence for Arsenal Ladies in the second leg of their Uefa Women’s Cup Quarter Final next week.
Captain Ludlow headed Vic Akers’ side in front after 90 seconds against Umea and the Ladies eventually secured a slender 3-2 advantage at Boreham Wood on Thursday night.
However, with the tie very much in the balance, the Welsh midfielder does not think that Arsenal will go to Sweden just to protect their one-goal advantage.
“I don’t think we have a mentality to go out there and defend, that is not the way Arsenal play,” said Ludlow after the victory. “We have to play to our strengths, and our strengths are attacking.
“As soon as we get on the ball we want to play. We want to get the ball down and we want to involve all the players, out wide, in midfield and the forwards. I knew that was our tactic out there but obviously they liked to turn us around a lot, that was their way of playing. It took us a while to get used to it but we adjusted.
“I am pleased with the amount of attacking options we had and the amount of chances we created. I’m disappointed that I missed about three sitters but hopefully I can make up for that in the next game.
“We will know that we have to keep our shape well but that is something we have worked on all season and it has got better. I am disappointed we let in two goals because I thought we are better than that, especially at set pieces.”
