Freddie Ljungberg v Juventus (H) 12-04-2001
After a tough start to the second stage of the Champions League, Arsenal needed to secure three points against Juventus in Group D to keep any hopes of advancing to the Quarter Finals alive.
First-half goals from Freddie Ljungberg and Thierry Henry restored that hope, but an own goal by goalkeeper Stuart Taylor early in the second half opened the door for the visitors. And as the clock wore down, Juve was pushing for the equalizer.
But Arsenal weren’t about to allow that.
Ljungberg surged through the midfield, and passed the ball to Dennis Bergkamp on the right side of the area. The Dutchman used his artistry to hold off two Juventus players as Ljungberg prepared to make his move.
Bergkamp lifted the ball past the defenders in the direction of the breaking Swede. Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon saw the opportunity and rushed toward the ball, but not before Ljungberg chipped the ball over his head and into the net.
A great finish by Ljungberg made legendary by Bergkamp’s assist.
