Gunners' 43rd Greatest Goal - Patrick Vieira

Patrick Vieira v Manchester United (H) 11-09-1997
Matches between Arsenal and Manchester United are always heated affairs, and this one from Arsène Wenger’s first full season in charge was no exception. With only defeat in the first 14 games, Arsenal were aiming to topple the Premier League champions.

Nicolas Anelka got things going after seven minutes, scoring his first Arsenal goal. 20 minutes later, it was time for a lanky 21-year-old to step up.

Ray Parlour took a corner that was nodded clear by United’s Henning Berg at the front post. But the ball went only as far as Patrick Vieira, who was running across the edge of the area. Without breaking his stride, the midfielder rifled a shot through several bodies and over the head of Peter Schmeichel.

The downside of his fantastic strike came via his celebration. Vieira finished a long sprint by sliding on his knees… which resulted in an injury that kept him out until Boxing Day.

But a terrific strike nonetheless.
