Bergkamp v Newcastle United (A) 03-02-2002
Now that we have seen 49 of the greatest goals in Arsenal’s history, it may not be a surprise for many to learn that the final installment comes from Dennis Bergkamp. The Dutchman’s strike at Newcastle is a testament to the player and everything he accomplished in a decade with the Club.
Bergkamp has five previous appearances on our list and a vast collection of classic moments, but this was quite possibly his magnum opus. The goal sums up his vision, intelligence, touch and clinical finishing in one master stroke.
And it wasn’t just about artistry. It came two months before the end of the season and
Arsenal were fighting for the Premier League title. Bergkamp's strike at St. James Park set up an invaluable 2-0 win.
Also memorable, the play involved three of Arsenal's biggest guns. Patrick Vieira started the fluid counter-attack and picked out Bergkamp from deep inside the Arsenal half. The Dutchman played the ball to Robert Pires on the left flank and then stormed forward while the Frenchman made progress out wide.
Pires cut inside and spotted Bergkamp on the edge of the box. He fired a pass toward the Dutchman who was sitting at the edge of the area.
Bergkamp slid from right to left with Newcastle defender Nikos Dabizas close by. As the ball came flying towards his left foot, Bergkamp had to call on his famous creativity. With his right foot, he flicked the ball to one side of Dabizas and rolled around the other side. He then simply outmuscled the defender to get back on the ball.
Still having Shay Given to beat, the Iceman kept his composure to finish off what he had started. Ever so coolly, Bergkamp side-footed the ball past the Newcastle keeper and into the bottom corner.
A legendary goal for a legendary player.
