Van Persie v Charlton Athletic (A) 09-30-2006
To say Robin van Persie has enjoyed a spectacular 2011 would be a bit of an understatement. After missing most of the first half of the season to injury, the Dutchman broke loose with 18 Premier League goals from January to the end of the season.
Not that we haven’t seen that kind of performance from Van Persie before. His technical ability and explosive finishing has never been in doubt, but a match against Charlton in September 2006 put his talents on full display.
After Darren Bent gave the Addicks a one-goal lead midway through the first half, Van Persie got the equalizer 11 minutes later. The scoreline remained even until the break, but it wouldn’t take long for Van Persie to give Arsenal the lead in spectacular fashion.
The move started with Alex Hleb collecting a cross-field pass on the right. He threaded a pass between two Charlton players, leading Emmanuel Eboue was surging down the right. The Ivorian met the ball with a first-time cross which curved towards the edge of the penalty area.
Van Persie had sprinted forward to get near the box for Eboue's delivery. Twenty yards from goal, he met the cross at high speed, jumped into the air to and executed a perfect volley. The ball flew past Charlton keeper Scott Carson and straight to the top corner.
Van Persie ran to the visiting Arsenal supporters and celebrated wildly. And with a goal like that, who could blame him?22 Jun 2011
