Gunners' 9th Greatest Goal - Andrey Arshavin

Arshavin v Liverpool (A) 04-21-2009
Anfield has provided many memorable moments – good and bad – for Arsenal supporters. The most famous, of course, was when Arsenal won the League in 1989 in dramatic fashion. But another of those strong memories came much more recently. It was in April of 2009, and it came courtesy of Andrey Arshavin.

After taking the lead in the 36th minute, Arsenal found themselves behind 2-1 midway through the second-half and were playing a bit on their heels. But when Lukasz Fabianski launched a long punt downfield in the 67th minute, everything changed.

Arshavin, hardly renowned for his prowess in the air, managed to nod the ball on. The play looked destined to break down as Jamie Carragher intercepted on the edge of his own area. But instead of just heading the ball clear, the Liverpool defender cushioned it down to Alvaro Arbeloa. Even the Spaniard failed to anticipate that move and Arshavin pounced and stole the ball.

The Russian was still 25 yards from goal but he advanced to the edge of the box. Despite three Liverpool players surrounding him, he unleashed a vicious, swerving shot which flew past Pepe Reina and into corner of the Liverpool goal.

With his trademark ‘shhh’ gesture, Arshavin dashed straight to the travelling Arsenal fans at that end of the ground to celebrate his second goal of the game – high-fiving several as he ran by. And there was still be more to come.

He finished the night with four goals, but to most observers this was the best of his quartet.
