Emmanuel Adebayor v Villareal (A) 04-07-2009
He may not be the most popular of players among Arsenal fans, but at his best Emmanuel Adebayor was certainly capable of the sublime. And this Golden Goal serves as a reminder of that.
In the first leg of the 2009 Champions League Quarter-Final at Villarreal, Arsenal were struggling. They deservedly fell behind in the 10th minute after Marcos Senna found the top corner from 25 yards out. It wasn’t until the second half that Arsenal forced their way back into the game and cranked up the pressure.
The Gunners were searching for the away goal, and in the 66th minute they found it. And as you might expect, Cesc Fabregas made it happen. Denilson sent the ball to the Spaniard who was all alone, 40 yards out. As Fabregas looked up, he spotted Adebayor running toward the box and floated a perfect pass to the striker.
Adebayor turned his back to the goal and in one fluid movement chested the ball up before firing a volley toward the bottom corner. So sharp was Adebayor’s execution, that Villarreal’s goalkeeper, Diego Lopez, could only manage to glance at the ball as it flew past him.
It turned the tide and transformed the tie. Eight days later Arsenal won at home 3-0 with Adebayor scoring once more against the Spanish outfit.
It would be his final goal for Arsenal.26 Jan 2011
