Dennis Bergkamp v Tottenham (H) 11-24-1996
Dennis Bergkamp makes his second appearance in our series by putting the finishing touches on a win in a rain-soaked North London derby.
After a bad run of games, culminating in a narrow defeat to Manchester United, Arsenal needed a big win. And with Spurs visiting Highbury, the time was right to get back on track.
An Ian Wright penalty kick gave the Gunners a lead in 28th minute, but Spurs managed to equalize on Andy Sinton’s bobbling, long-range effort just before the hour-mark.
It looked like another disappointing draw until the 88th minute when Tony Adams saved the day with a fierce left-foot strike.
Tottenham were shell-shocked but Arsenal, and particularly Bergkamp, weren’t done yet.
Wright, wide on the right-hand side, pirouetted away from Ruel Fox and sent a high, looping cross towards the far post. At such a tight angle there seemed to be little opportunity to add to Arsenal’s lead.
But this was Bergkamp.
His first touch was truly sublime. He controlled the high delivery with his left foot, and easily evaded Stephen Carr to set himself up perfectly for the strike. As anyone would expect, the finish was perfect.
The Iceman was always a cool customer when it came to showing his emotion, but this celebration was complete with knee-sliding and fist-clenching. And that celebration confirmed the importance of a derby goal.
