The Austin Gooners... if you are ever in Austin, visit them on matchday!
Meet the Austin Gooners
Normally when you say the word 'football' in America - and especially in Texas - it conjures up visions of Sunday afternoons, big hits and the Detroit Lions losing. (I'm a Lions fan, so I'm allowed to say that.)
But to a group of people in the state's capital, it means Arsenal. The latest stop on our tour of Arsenal America branches takes us 'Deep in the Heart of Texas' to Austin where you can always stop by Cuatro's to join a big crowd of dedicated supporters. And as one member says:
"Despite our large fan-base, we have not been maligned with the “casual fan syndrome” that seems to affect our esteemed rivals. We are there for every match."
Group Name: Austin Gooners
Location: Austin, Texas
Year established: 2007
Number of active members: 30
Normal match start time: 9am
Where we watch matches: Cuatro's 1004 West 24th Street Austin, TX 78705
Where our members hail from: Austin, San Antonio and all parts Texas!
Group's favorite Arsenal moments: The Invincibles. The Champions League run in 2006. The last day at Highbury. Singing "One Arsène Wenger!" and naturally, "It's up for grabs, now!"
Group's favorite players: : Liam Brady, Dennis Bergkamp, and of course, Mr. Thierry Henry. Today's greats: Theo, Jack, Cesc, Aaron, The Verminator, Sagna, Nasri... and who hasn't come to love Eboue after what he went through!
Why we are Gooners: Texans take a lot of pride in doing their work the right way, and that attitude is exemplified at Arsenal Football Club. Also, we're pro-gun here and we love the cannon!
Why Americans should be Arsenal fans: Arsenal are always striving to be the best, and are known for their back-breaking labor to get the job done. This is America at its purest.
