Arsenal has a long tradition of assisting good causes and fundraising for charity.  Arsenal in the Community coordinated ‘swimathons’ and fun runs back in the 1980s in which Arsenal supporting celebrities alongside Arsenal in the Community participated with huge enthusiasm.

Arsenal Charitable Trust
In 1992, the Club’s charitable giving to local causes was consolidated by the Arsenal Charitable Trust which has donated over £2m to good causes.  Each year around £50,000 is distributed in small amounts to worthy causes. Hospitals, disability groups, charities for young children and young people feature prominently amongst the donations made by the Trust.

Over the years, an emphasis on fun and enjoyment has driven the Trust’s fundraising efforts.  For over 17 years, ex-professional footballers, sports personalities and celebrity supporters have been playing regularly for the Arsenal Charity Team against clubs across the south to raise money for the Arsenal Charitable Trust amongst other worthwhile causes.

There are also two bucket collections at the stadium each season and events are organised during the year in conjunction with the Charity of the Season.

Charity of the Season
In 2003, Arsenal Football Club strengthened its charitable giving even further by channelling its fundraising and awareness raising efforts into one nominated charity each season. The Charity of the Season initiative has raised nearly £3m to date for the Club’s charity partners which have included ChildLine, the David Rocastle Trust, the Willow Foundation, TreeHouse, Teenage Cancer Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity and Centrepoint.

The Annual Arsenal Charity Ball is a flagship event in the Club’s calendar which sees the Arsenal first team, celebrity guests and Arsenal supporters raising money for the Charity of the Season and the Arsenal Charitable Trust in an evening of spectacular entertainment and generous fundraising.

Be a Gooner.  Be a Giver.
Arsenal’s Charity of the Season initiative is known as ‘Be a Gooner. Be a Giver.’; a legacy left by the partnership with TreeHouse; the national charity for autism education. This partnership raised the bar in terms of fundraising and innovation in 2008, smashing previous fundraising efforts with the Club and its supporters, raising over half a million pounds for the charity’s new National Centre for Autism Education. Arsenal’s donation funded sports facilities inside the Centre, as well as classrooms, a common room and a speech therapy room.

Since TreeHouse, the Club has linked up with Teenage Cancer Trust, the charity dedicated to improving the lives of young people with cancer, to fund an education zone inside a brand new Day Care Centre at University Hospital London, the Club enjoyed record breaking fundraising success with Great Ormond Street Hospital Childrens’ Charity to fund a new Lung Function Unit and the Club is currently working towards the refurbishment of a building in Soho for homeless young people to visit gain life skills to get back on their feet through its partnership with Centrepoint.

Each year as part of the campaign, Arsenal players have donated a day’s wages to the charity as part of a matchday dedicated to the charity around Christmas time.

Arsenal Charity Team
Throughout its history of fundraising, Arsenal in the Community has always encouraged participants and supporters to join in and have fun in the process.  The Arsenal Charity Team is no exception.
Over 500 games have been played by the Arsenal Charity Team and a lot of money has been raised for local charities and the Arsenal Charitable Trust. The Team is filled with a loyal bunch of ex-players and many celebrities that turn up in all weathers in many obscure places. At the moment, the squad includes Ralf Little, Mark Ramprakash, Tony Hadley, Patrick Robinson, Phil Daniels and Tommy Walsh.

The commitment is very strong along with the sense of humour and the memories are still being added to each game played.

Good Causes Policy
Arsenal Football Club is committed to offering its support to charitable projects and good causes wherever possible. Primarily, the Club will offer support to requests from the local community, with particular focus upon initiatives operating within the Islington area.

The Club also endeavours to support all other charities and good causes throughout the UK and beyond. However, due to the overwhelming demand for assistance throughout the course of a season, it is not always possible to do so. With this in mind, and considering the fact that the Club seeks to spread its support to as many different recipients as possible, together with the support for our nominated Charity of the Season, it is likely that each good cause will be limited to a maximum of one means of support in any one season.

The Club requires that each request comes directly from the specific Charity and all correspondence is sent on official headed paper or email from the specific charity for the attention of Lynne Chaney. Please send all requests to charity@arsenal.co.uk. or
