Volleyball is an Olympic team sport and is one of the top 3 most participated sports in the World with 500 million people participating worldwide! Volleyball is split into 3 separate disciplines: Indoor, Beach and Sitting.
Indoor volleyball consists of two teams of six players and are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. The ball is usually played with the hands or arms, but players can legally strike or push (short contact) the ball with any part of the body. Professional volleyball players can jump up 1 metre off the floor! Volleyball can and is often played with them same rules but in an outdoor setting.
Arsenal Premier League 4 Sport Volleyball is currently running in 3 satellite clubs. Below are the dates and times of each session:
Tuesdays - Holloway School, Islington - 3.30-5.30pm
Wednesdays - Camden School for Girls - 4.30-6.00pm
Saturdays – Clapton School, Hackney – 1.30-3.30pm
Arsenal's currently work with two HUB Volleyball Clubs. The London Beach Volleyball Club is quite a rarity in London; and in the summer months the artificial beach in Shoreditch Park, Hackney is transformed into a volleyball haven. For more information about the London Beach Volleyball Club, please go to their website www.londonbeachvolleyball.org.
Our second HUB club is in the process of moving into the Islington area. The London Lynx VC has two sections, with the game as we know it also joined by the East London Sitting Volleyball team. In early 2011, the Lynx are moving into the Sobell Leisure Centre near Emirates to use their fantastic facilities as an Olympic Training venue. For more information, please see the website on www.londonlynx.org or contact Gary Beckford on firstname.lastname@example.org.
