Carlos Vela
South Africa 1-1 Mexico, Group A
Friday, May 11
Carlos Vela was in the starting XI as Mexico drew 1-1 with hosts South Africa to get World Cup underway in Johannesburg.
The striker came close to opening the scoring in the 34th minute but slid his effort wide of the far post. Moments later Vela thought he had bagged the first goal of the 2010 World Cup.
Guillermo Franco rose to meet a corner and with his effort heading wide Vela diverted it into the back of the net. However, the referee's assistant had raised his flag. The South African keeper had left his goal to meet the initial cross, leaving Vela in an offside position.
Nine minutes after half time Siphiwe Tshabalala fired South Africa ahead with a powerful left-footed shot. With 69 minutes played Vela was replaced by Cuauhtemoc Blanco.
Mexico's equaliser came with 12 minutes remaining when Rafael Marquez controlled a cross and smashed into the back of the net.
Next up for El Tricolor is a clash with France on Thursday.
