Nico’s versatility held him in good stead last season as he enjoyed his breakthrough into Arsène Wenger’s first-team set-up.
Although naturally a central midfielder, Nico’s experiences as a right back in the reserves saw him step up in that role when Arsenal’s frontline full backs were sidelined.
Nico made a solid Premier League debut against Manchester United at Emirates Stadium, after appearances in the cup competitions against Bolton and Leeds.
“I like Nico because he has 100 per cent focus, good physical qualities, good intelligence, good reading of the game and personality," Wenger said.
“He is a guy who, believe me, will make a big career. He has what it takes to be always better, his whole career will improve because he has the mental abilities of somebody who is suited to the top level.
“He is a midfielder. To come on as a right back against Nani, who is one of the top players in the league, and produce the kind of performance he produced is absolutely outstanding.”
The England Under-19 international also enjoyed a brief spell on loan with League One outfit Notts County, making two appearances.Copyright 2017 The Arsenal Football Club plc.
