Terry Burton believes academy hopeful Chuba Akpom has shown he can build on last season’s appearances for the Under-18s.

Akpom, just 16 years of age, impressed for Burton’s reserves on Saturday as an Arsenal XI rallied from a goal down to beat Boreham Wood.

The young forward played 15 times for Steve Bould’s Under-18s last season - effectively one year early as he officially begins his first year in the academy this season.

“I thought Chuba Akpom was excellent for a 16-year-old,” said Burton after Saturday’s game. “He has done very well in pre-season training and he carried that on into this game.

“We are just hoping now that he keeps that quality and effort throughout the rest of the season and who knows where he could end up.

“It is massive for him [to have an extra year in the academy] and that is what we are all about, that is what we really want. We want our good young players to be playing as high as they can as quickly as possible.

“It has always been the benchmark of this Club - quality players moving through the ranks and getting into the first team. That is always the aim.”
