On getting a soaking from his players…
“It has been planned for about three days I think! Jay Thomas has been dying to get me so I'll accept that."

On winning the Youth Cup…
“For these kids it has topped a great, great year. We know we are not in a results environment when we set out at the start of the season, but the way they have performed all year, they have been head and shoulders above most of the other teams in the country. I think we've got excellent players and this is the icing on the cake.”

On the second-leg performance…
“It wasn't anywhere near the level we reached on Friday but we showed our quality in a few little patches. I think we were always capable of stepping it up because Liverpool came back to 1-1 but we still got the result. It was difficult and we didn't perform at our greatest level but it didn't really matter tonight. They all tried. They did switch off a little bit but like I say it was a great result and has capped a fine season.”

On Emmanuel Frimpong missing the game through injury…
“He has been magnificent this season and he is extremely unlucky to miss out on most of the Final. As it happened his injury didn't do us too much harm because Jack Wilshere dropped back and got on the ball. He looked like he was enjoying his football again. We have so many good players that it's difficult to fit them all in the team where they are supposed to play.

"Manny's injury didn't help him - it helped Jack - but he has had a great year and he didn't miss out completely because he did start the Academy League Final. But we've got bigger things ahead for him we hope.”

On the 20th anniversary of Anfield '89…
“It doesn't seem like 20 years. It's an awful long time. The place has changed quite a bit - when we won the title at Anfield it was the old Kop and all the fans were standing and swaying. It's a slightly different place but what an anniversary to have. It couldn't have fallen on a better day for me, it's fabulous.”

On different emotions as a winning coach…
“It's different to winning as a player. This is not first team level but it doesn't matter. The biggest, most pleasing part for me is not just the result but the fact that we've got good kids here and we think we are developing them as players.”
