Nicklas Bendtner, Fabrice Muamba
West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Birmingham City, March 18
Nicklas Bendtner played a full 90 minutes as 10-man Birmingham came
from behind to draw 1-1 with local rivals West Bromwich Albion.
Following a goalless first half Paul McShane side-footed home 19
minutes after the interval to give the hosts the lead. Midfielder
Julian Gray was then dismissed for a trip on McShane but with four
minutes remaining Damien Johnson struck a fine volley to earn a
point. Another Arsenal loanee, Fabrice Muamba, played 82 minutes
before he was replaced by ex-Gunner Sebastian Larsson. The result
leaves the Blues second in the Championship, two points behind
Derby County but with a game in hand.
Alexandre Song
Charlton Athletic 2-0 Newcastle United, March 18
Alexandre Song started but played only 40 minutes as Charlton
earned a morale-boosting victory at home to Newcastle. Following a
scoreless first half Zheng Zhi turned in his first goal for the
hosts eight minutes after the interval. The China captain was then
fouled inside the box by Nolberto Solano with two minutes remaining
and ex-Gunner Jerome Thomas wrapped up the points from the spot.
The result throws the 18th-placed Addicks a lifeline as they are
now just four points behind Sheffield United with eight games still
to go.
Arturo Lupoli
Derby County 3-1 Cardiff City, March 17
Arsenal loanees Arturo Lupoli and Kerrea Gilbert missed out as
Derby moved to the top of the Championship with victory over
Cardiff. Top scorer Steve Howard put the Rams ahead from the spot
on 27 minutes with his 15th goal of the season. The lead lasted
just four minutes as Paul Parry's emphatic strike drew the
Bluebirds level. It was all Derby after the break though and they
retook the lead through Giles Barnes just four minutes into the
second half. Howard then hit his second on the hour mark to secure
a valuable three points. Striker Lupoli has made 33 appearances for
Derby this season, scoring 11 goals. Meanwhile defender Gilbert has
played 23 times for Cardiff but is yet to open his goalscoring
account.
Joe O'Cearuill
Brighton and Hove Albion 1-1 Scunthorpe United, March 17
Joe O'Cearuill played a full 90 minutes as Brighton came from
behind to take a point at home to Scunthorpe. Bas Savage lobbed
home the equaliser on 72 minutes, eight minutes after Jermaine
Beckford had put the visitors ahead with a superb solo strike.
Scunthorpe, who are now unbeaten in 16 games, ended the game with
10 men when Matthew Sparrow received his second yellow card. The
result leaves Brighton 16th in League One with 48 points from 38
games.
