Benik Afobe is putting in extra work at London Colney to get himself 100 per cent for the new campaign after last season’s injury problems.

The young striker was sidelined for six months after picking up a serious groin injury last summer before returning in February to make a handful of appearances in the reserves.

Afobe is set to feature for England at this summer’s Under-19 European Championship and the powerful striker is leaving nothing to chance with his fitness.

“I have been at the training ground to do a bit of work in the gym,” he told the Official Arsenal Magazine. “It's important to keep fit during the summer, even though it can be tough to motivate yourself sometimes when your mates are all having fun.

Jack Wilshere and Carl Jenkinson were at the training ground too, so it was good to see them. It was like a pre-pre-season for us so we are ahead when the real work starts soon.

“As a sportsman though you love it, the aim is to be 100 per cent ready for England Under-19s, then for the start of Arsenal's season. I have a short holiday coming up, but then it's back to the football.”
