Four Premier League appearances, a Champions League debut and four starts in cup competitions - it's not been a bad season for Ignasi Miquel.

Nobody expected the young Spaniard to be thrust into the limelight so soon, least of all the humble 19-year-old himself, who has dealt with the responsibility well.

Ignasi was handed an unexpected league debut in Arsenal's early-season defeat to Liverpool at Emirates Stadium, replacing the injured Laurent Koscielny early in the game. The Gunners may have lost, but the Spanish defender kept Andy Carroll quiet for the entire match.

The Carling Cup provided more opportunities alongside Johan Djourou at the heart of defence, while his credentials at left back were tested to the maximum when he was called upon three times off the bench in the league during Arsenal's full-back struggles.

A Champions League debut at Olympiacos followed, where Ignasi registered a key contribution in Yossi Benayoun's consolation strike. All in all, a campaign to remember for the young Spaniard.

SOUNDBITE

“In the last two or three years I have been playing at centre back so it's quite hard for me to get back to left back. But to be fair I used to play there and you more or less try to remember what you can from when you were younger. Once you get there training and playing a couple of games, it is just another position. I think it's a position I'm going to learn much more in so I just have to try and keep focused."

FINEST MOMENT

Ignasi had only featured twice in last season's FA Cup campaign against Leyton Orient, so the prospect of replacing Koscielny early against Liverpool was daunting. But the 19-year-old stuck to his task superbly, allowing Carroll nothing for the remainder of the clash.
