On the game of two halves…
“I thought we played alright at times in the first half but in the second half we were a lot quicker at moving the ball around. I think our fitness told against these lads and in the end we ran out comfortable winners after a fine second half display. But there was some good football in the first half as well.”
On the threat of Blue Square South side Maidenhead…
“I think to be fair to Maidenhead they played some quite good football and gave us some problems in the first half. It wasn’t too physical, both sides let each other play and it was a good pre-season friendly.
“They did very well in the first half and it was a difficult game for us. But in the second half, when our fitness told, we injected more pace into our game and I thought we did very well.”
On the overall shape of the side…
“We are only halfway through the pre-season really. There is another couple of games; Borehamwood next week, then we’ll probably fix up another friendly before the season starts. We’re halfway through but, all-in-all, we’re in pretty good shape.”
On the advantages of facing lower-league opposition…
“It’s public relations more than anything. These clubs need teams like Arsenal to come down and help them get good gate receipts. The chairman here is a big Arsenal fan, he wrote me a nice letter, so we decided to come. We have got lots of fans in the Berkshire area and they came along to take a look at a lot of our good young players. It’s public relations and good preparation for the season coming.”
On Chuks Aneke’s goalscoring cameo…
“He’s a good finisher, Chuks. He is a big lad, very laid back but he has loads of skill and knows where the goal is.”
