On the performance...
"I thought we did OK in the first 20 minutes and we came back into it in the last 20 minutes, but I was disappointed with our performance in the middle part of the game. We seemed to get in front and then think ‘oh, we’re in front’ and went on the back foot. Chelsea upped their game and created some really good chances. We were quite naive in defence but Chelsea pushed on and I felt we rode our luck for 20 minutes. But in the last 20 minutes of the game I thought they rode their luck.

"We let in a couple of sloppy goals but overall it’s a start, we’re obviously disappointed to lose the first game but we’ll come back stronger for it."

On Rui Fonte...
"I was going to take Rui off because I thought he looked a little bit jaded but then he cracked one in and was really on his game. I wanted to get Jay [Simpson] out there on the wing and get down their left-hand side. We had a couple of chances there where I thought we could get a draw. Overall I am disappointed, we didn't pass the ball as well as we could have done really. But congratulations to Chelsea, they closed us down really well."

On taking positives...
"I think the spirit was good, obviously they want to win and it carries them through. They showed character and spirit to come back but you’d like to see class and good football carry them through as well and in the middle part of the game that was disappointing I felt."

On dealing with Drogba...
"I think they dealt with him OK, obviously Didier wasn’t at his 100 per cent maximum but I think he gave them a good game and I’m sure he’ll think we’ve got a couple of good centre halves there."

On appointing Gavin Hoyte as captain...
"Gavin has had a really good pre-season, he has worked extremely hard. He got selected for the first-team training camp in Austria and I think he deserves to lead the Reserve team this year."

On the departure of Justin Hoyte...
"He’s been a really good servant to the Club, coming through the academy and up into the first team. Unfortunately he decided to move on to play, that was his reason, to play regularly, He came up against Bacary Sagna who is first class. We wish Justin the very best for his future career."
