On his side’s overall performance…
“I think the work ethic, the movement and pressurising the ball in high areas pleased me most. We have worked on that a lot as a Club during pre-season and I was really pleased with that side of it.

“Obviously it’s the first game and they all want to do well. They were a little bit edgy, a little bit nervous and a bit over anxious. But once they calmed down and relaxed a little bit they went on to a good game.”

On Gilles Sunu’s 39th-minute strike…
“I was screaming to him to cross it to be honest but he’s smashed it in the back of the net. A good individual goal.”

On Roarie Deacon marking his debut with a goal…
“Roarie can do that, he’s done it in training and he’s played well for Steve [Bould]. He did well at the weekend so me and Steve spoke and we think Roarie deserves his opportunity. It’s a smashing sign of the Club working, he does well for Steve and makes the step up. That’s what football is all about.”

On Francis Coquelin’s performance…
“Francis is developing nicely along with all of the lads. They are all improving and as I said, a really good first performance.”

On setting a “marker” for the season…

“We’ve had a word during pre-season as a group about what we feel we should be achieving as a group and individually. I would say tonight was marker so we go to Birmingham (next week) and have another good performance collectively and individually and hopefully we’ll be ok.”

On the possibility of more loan movement…
“The manager makes all of those decisions. It is discussed with the technical staff and he will make the decision on the relevant lad – whether it’s beneficial for his career. Who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see.”
