On the result…
“I think we were a little hard done by. We started off really well for 20 minutes and then they seemed to hit a long-ball down the back of us and we have lost our way. We looked open in midfield and they could drive a bus through us at times. I thought we were hanging on a bit for the last 20 minutes of the first half but we have come out and dominated the game in the second half. We had a lot of possession without really creating many chances. I thought we created more in the first half and I have said to them that it is when you are on top of games that you need to make your dominance count. Overall I’m disappointed we have got beaten tonight but there are some real positives I think.

“Obviously we don’t want to keep losing games but we have always said it is more about the development of young players. I don’t think we have played the same side once this year. You get people coming in and people coming out so during the games you are going to get players making mistakes. That is a consequence of what we are trying to produce at the club. We will not defer from the way we are trying to bring these players through.”

On Arsenal’s cutting edge…
“I don’t know about lack of cutting edge. I think once or twice when we have got in and it has just been poor finishing. Jay’s got in and he has got to square it across the goal and Rhys has got in but wandered offside. They need to be more intelligent than that; they have been playing football since they were nine years of age. We have got three on two and Rhys has wandered offside. I have told them that they need to learn by it. Hopefully they will take it on board and we will start again.”

On being frustrated by the Hammers…
“To be honest I thought West Ham were always going to have a period of play in which they would dominate but I think that their 20 minutes of domination shook us a little bit. We didn’t quite come to terms with the system they were playing but we managed to sort that out at half time. We came out well in the second half and really I think the least we deserved was a draw."

On his midfield system…
“Amaury [Bischoff] is coming into the side and he is finding his way in English football. We have tried to play a diamond so we can get him on the ball and let him do what he is good at. They [West Ham] seemed to get on top of us a bit so we changed it and went 4-4-1-1 to play how we usually play. We got them in at half time and spoke to them about certain things we wanted them to do and got them into the shape we wanted them to play. I think in the second half we were on top.

“What we are trying to do is rotate them because they can’t play in central midfield all the time. I’ve said to Mark [Randall] if you come in and don’t get it then get out and one of the other midfielders can get it. It is rotation in the midfield positions. I think they are getting that but it is just disappointing when you play good stuff but don’t get what you deserve.”

On Bischoff’s second Arsenal outing…
“He is coming along fine. It is his first 90 minutes in 18 months so you can’t ask any more from him.  It will be a long road back for him but he has given us everything tonight. Hopefully he will do OK.”

On the return of captain Gavin Hoyte…
“I was very pleased with Gavin and Paul [Rodgers] but to be honest with you I was pleased with the whole side. When you are playing against a senior side like they were tonight then they are going to give you problems. It is a learning curve for them so when they step up they will be ready for it.”

On the Gunners’ next reserve opponents…
“Fulham are the same as anybody. They will have senior players and it will be a good hard game for our young players. You have to remember that some of our boys are still only 17 and 18 year olds. I was a little bit disappointed with some of slightly older players tonight who maybe had their eye on something else during the game but overall I was fairly pleased.”
