Jack Wilshere believes Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Wigan on Saturday was the perfect complement to the victory at Reading earlier in the week.

Arsène Wenger’s side were at their stylish best as they ran in five goals at the Madejski Stadium last Monday. The weekend win in Lancashire was more about steel and came courtesy of Mikel Arteta’s second-half penalty.

Still, those back-to-back victories put Arsenal up to fourth in the Premier League and Wilshere was happy to show different sides of his team’s character.

“We know it is a tough game coming to Wigan, with the weather and conditions,” said Wilshere. “But there is no point in us getting a result like the one at Reading if we can’t get a result there. For me, this win complemented that one and now we can build on them both.

“We all know Christmas is an important time in this league. We have to get some momentum now and this can only help.

“We know we have the ability to do well in this league. We are united and you could see that in the game at Wigan.

“We have never questioned our character. We know we have a great squad and team-spirit. It showed on the pitch on Saturday.

“But we have Newcastle coming up on Saturday now. There is a week to recover and then we have to go again.”
