Jack Wilshere reminds Arsène Wenger of Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes.

Comparisons with one of the Premier League’s greatest ever players are clear when you ally Wilshere’s technical quality with his ability to 'dig in'. Wenger knows that is a rarity in the modern game.

“He has the side of players like Scholes. He can fight and play,” said the manager.

“Jack has what you want from a midfielder, both parts of it. He is good in the defensive box and good in the offensive box. We are used to players being only strong on one side more than the other. He can have both.

“More than aggression, I would say commitment. Aggression is something negative. He has a committed attitude and he needs to keep that.

“You can go into a fight with him. Sometimes it can be too much at the start but I like this side of his character. He is committed, he will fight for the cause and he will not hide.”
